Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an Electric Community Group?

An Electric Community Group is a local, volunteer-run group that helps households in its area switch from gas and petrol to electric: rooftop solar, home batteries, heat-pump hot water, reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooking and electric vehicles. Groups are independent and community-led. This directory lists 104 local groups across Australia, plus groups you can join online from anywhere.

What do Electric Community Groups do?

Every group is different, but many run information nights and workshops, share what members have learned from their own solar, battery, hot water and EV installs, open electric homes for tours, and help neighbours work out where to start. Some organise group purchases or run local campaigns, for example asking their council to support electrification.

Why join a local electrification group?

Going electric is easier with people who have already done it. A local group can tell you what worked in homes like yours, in your climate, and with the installers and electricity network in your area. It's also a way to meet neighbours, share the effort, and add your voice to a local push for cheaper, cleaner energy.

How do I find solar, battery or EV help near me?

Type your postcode or suburb into the search at the top of this page. It shows the groups that cover your area, groups within 50 km if none do yet, and online groups that are open to everyone. Each group's page has its website or contact details, so you can get in touch directly.

What if there's no group in my area?

Check the nearby and online groups the search suggests: many welcome people from outside their patch. Or consider starting one. You don't need to be an expert, just keen to help your neighbours go electric.

How do I start an Electric Community Group?

Get a few interested neighbours together and email the Communities team. Through the Electric Communities Network, Rewiring Australia supports new and existing groups with workshops, resources and connections to other groups and, at times, small grant programs.

What is the Electric Communities Network?

The Electric Communities Network is Rewiring Australia's supported space for community groups to collaborate and amplify their local campaigns. Groups share what works, learn from each other, and together build the collective power to call for the changes needed to electrify everything for everyone.

What does the Electric Communities Network offer?

We offer workshops, resources and connections to other groups, and at times we run small grant programs to support local campaigns.

What is Rewiring Australia's role?

We aim to showcase, support and grow the impact of Electric Community Groups, and to build their collective power to call for the systemic changes needed to electrify everything for everyone.

Are the groups run by Rewiring Australia?

No. The groups listed here are independent community groups. Rewiring Australia showcases and supports their work through the Electric Communities Network, but each group sets its own activities.

How do local groups help Australia electrify?

Most of Australia's household energy use can switch to electricity powered by the sun and wind. That change happens one home at a time, and people trust advice from neighbours. Local groups turn that trust into action: every household they help lowers its energy bills and emissions, and together they show councils and governments that communities want to electrify. Why electrify.

How do I plan rooftop solar for my home?

Start with your electricity bills or smart meter data to see how much power you use and when. Then think about your roof (direction, shading and space) and whether you'll add a battery or an EV later, because that affects the size of system that suits you. Get quotes from more than one accredited installer, and ask your local group which installers members have used. How to electrify your home.

Should I get a home battery?

A battery stores the solar power you don't use during the day, so you can use it in the evening. Whether it pays off depends on how much solar you have, when you use power, your electricity plan, and the discounts available, including the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Compare quotes, check what you're eligible for, and ask local group members how their batteries perform.

How do I switch to an electric vehicle and charge it at home?

Most EV charging happens at home. Many drivers use a standard power point for short daily trips, and a dedicated wall charger makes charging faster. If you have solar, charging in the middle of the day can make driving very cheap. Local groups often have members who can share their EV and charging experience. Electric vehicle FAQs.

What should I electrify first?

A good rule is to replace gas and petrol appliances with electric ones as they wear out, so you're never forced into a rushed decision. Hot water, heating and cooling, and cooking are the usual big three at home, and solar can come first if you want to cut bills straight away. A plan for your whole home helps you do it in the right order. Try the savings calculator or ask Electric Saul.

Are there rebates for solar, batteries, heat pumps and EVs?

Yes. Federal, state, territory and some council programs offer discounts, rebates and low-interest loans, and they change often. Check the Australian Government's energy rebates finder for what applies where you live, and confirm eligibility with your installer before you buy.
